OSU IT Student Spotlight: Gwendolyn Henson-Meyers

Bringing Creativity and Connection to the Media Hub

  Story by Kallyn Zaner

Oregon State University's Media Hub thrives on creativity, collaboration, and student-driven innovation, and Gwendolyn Henson- Meyers plays an essential role in that success. As a member of the productions and communications team, Gwendolyn assists her peers with bringing their creative ideas and visions to life. “My day changes based on what needs to be done,” Gwendolyn explains. “I tend to help in a few different stations. Currently, I work in production and at the communications desk helping clients with their poster printing needs, from creating a ticket for their order to printing their poster and making sure it looks good for presentation.”

One of her favorite parts of this position is the opportunity to witness the excitement of the students as they see their finished work for the first time. “I love being able to print someone's art, class projects, or research, and see their hard work come to life,” she says.

As an out-of-state student originally from Chicago, Gwendolyn knew when she decided to pursue her studies at OSU that she wanted to find employment that would connect her to the community. “After looking through jobs, I found a position at the Media Hub and liked that they provided supplies and resources for the students. It seemed like such an important part of campus life, and I knew it would be a great way to get to know the school and my fellow students.”

During her time at the Media Hub, Gwendolyn has gained hands-on experience that she will carry into her post-grad career. “I had very little experience in video editing or marketing guidelines before working here, but now I have a much better understanding of both,” she states. “I also love getting to work with other students and helping them with their project needs.” Gwendolyn says that her experiences at the Media Hub have contributed to both her professional skills and personal growth. “Working here has strengthened my customer service, video editing, and project management skills.” Moving forward, she strives to apply these talents to a career in Habitat and Wildlife Conservation. “Project management will help me stay organized and handle the many moving parts that come with conservation work,” she explains, “and I think photo and video editing can be a powerful tool for community outreach because getting people involved is one of the best ways to create real change.”

Among her many contributions, two projects have stood out as her favorites thus far. The first was restructuring the Media Hub’s Instagram account alongside another student employee. “We worked to get our page up and running again, ensuring we had more frequent and engaging posts.” Gwendolyn serves as the lead of the social media team, managing and directing projects, while simultaneously maintaining a combination of informative and entertaining content. The second project is one that many students across campus may recognize: the Media Hub bookmark she designed“It’s a short form infographic that helps students easily understand and remember what the Media Hub does. I designed it to hand out at OSU fairs, and love seeing students interact with it,” she says.

Throughout her time at the Media Hub, Gwendolyn has continuously assisted her peers with their creative projects and visions. Through her innovative skills, willingness to learn and grow, and desire to support the customers, Gwendolyn is building a strong foundation for her own future by committing to making a positive impact on the world.
