OSU IT Student Spotlight: Emerie Doell, Social Media Specialist for the College of Business
Story by Kallyn Zaner
From trending reels to strategic storytelling, Emerie Doell is one of the creative student forces keeping the College of Business social media content top of feed.
When describing her role within the team, she explained her work is centered at the intersection of creativity, strategy, and collaboration. “Each day looks different, because it really depends on what COB needs at that moment,” Emerie says. “A typical day usually consists of a mix of planning, scheduling, and creating content.” Her day begins with discussions about the priorities, upcoming events, and communication needs that support the college's digital presence. After checking various social platforms, outlining the content calendar, and verifying all projects are on track, Emerie, along with the rest of the Social Media team, works to ensure all content is successfully implemented.
From planning and scheduling content creation calendars to coordinating campaigns to tracking performance analytics, there is so much more to the creation process than what meets the eye. A substantial amount of Emerie’s role includes hands-on content creation, filming and editing videos, designing graphics, or brainstorming with her team members. She also spends some time responding to emails and coordinating with various departments across the college to ensure cohesive communication. “People don’t always see how many moving pieces we’re handling at once,” she explains.
Emerie enjoys graphic design because it pushes her outside of her comfort zone, allowing her to grow in an area where she initially didn't have much experience. However, skit style content pieces for various platforms such as TikTok and Instagram are her favorite projects to produce. With attention to detail, thoughtful and intricate preproduction planning, and an emphasis on teamwork, these pieces embody what it means to Emerie to be on the social media team. “Anything that involves collaboration is my favorite,” she shares. “It’s really fun to bounce ideas off each other and build creative energy as a team.” For Emerie, the most rewarding part of the position is not just the final product, but the creative process along the way.
Her position as a Social Media Specialist has played a significant role in her professional development. Emerie states the job has helped her grow in three major areas: organization and planning, leadership and teamwork, and content creation. By managing multiple projects at once with attention to deadlines and criteria, she has strengthened her ability to stay on task and efficient. Working in a creative team environment has sharpened her overall leadership abilities, as well as her ability to collaborate. Her position has enabled her to work on a variety of diverse projects, think creatively and strategically, and see tangible results when projects perform well. Through her work, she has built strong and meaningful connections within the College of Business, which has helped expand her network and open doors as she moves forward with her career.
Emerie emphasizes how supportive social media team has is. “It’s been such a great role with a team that truly builds each other up,” she says. Being a Social Media Specialist has been far more than just a student employee position for Emerie. It’s been a rewarding experience that has bolstered her toolkit and her confidence as she progresses through her career and prepares for the future.
For other students considering a similar position, Emerie’s main piece of advice is simple. “Go for it. It’s super fun and a great fit for anyone who enjoys being creative and communicating effectively,” she says.
