Popcorn, Cotton Candy and a Cyber Carnival:
OIS celebrates National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
How do you fix a vulnerability in your jack-o-lantern? With a pumpkin patch.
Bad jokes aside, while October was filled with all things ghoulish and pumpkin spice, for OSU’s Office of Information Security, it was also an opportunity to celebrate National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and engage with the OSU community to learn about cyber health and resiliency.
National Cybersecurity Awareness Month was established by the US President and Congress in 2004 to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. This year’s theme was “Secure Our World,” which promoted simple techniques to secure and protect ourselves from cyber threats.
The Office of Information Security (OIS) hosted several events throughout the month, connecting with students, faculty, and staff across the university.
Cybersecurity Carnival
OIS kicked off festivities with a Cybersecurity Carnival for the OSU community. Students, faculty, and staff were invited to participate in a variety of events, play carnival games, eat popcorn and cotton candy, and learn about cyber health and hygiene using a cyber passport. Approximately 200 students completed the passport tour.
Many thanks to Printing & Mailing for developing unique marketing materials and prizes for the event! The Spam Mail Kids were a hit.
Cybersecurity Tabletop Exercise
To enhance OSU’s preparedness and response capabilities, IT leaders and the university’s Incident Management Team participated in a cyber incident simulation facilitated by Mandiant, a leading cybersecurity services firm. The simulation ran the group through a scenario: what should OSU do in the event it is targeted for a high-level ransomware attack?
FYI Friday
Deputy Chief Information Security Officer Marjorie McClagan hosted an FYI Friday on “Viruses, Malware and Ransomware, OH MY! A Cybersecurity Update for the OSU Community.”
OSU-Cascades
OIS hosted a cyber session for faculty and staff, and an informational table for students.
